Maarten van Aalst is Director-General of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, providing the Netherlands with timely information, advice and warnings on weather, climate and seismology, working closely with stakeholders to ensure science has an impact in policy and practice. He is also full professor of climate and disaster resilience at ITC, University of Twente, a member of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change under the EU Climate Law, and Trustee of the International Institute for Climate and Development (IIED). He serves as Permanent Representative of the Netherlands at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), and on the Council of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). Before coming to KNMI, Maarten was Director of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre. He also served as co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Climate Risk Management, on the Technical Expert Group on Comprehensive Risk Management of the UNFCCC Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage, the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel of the UN Office for Disaster Reduction (UNDRR), the Leadership Group of the UN Climate Resilience Initiative (A2R), the Steering Group of the Partners for Resilience alliance, the NWO-WOTRO Steering Committee, and advisory boards of several international research programmes. At the UK Overseas Development Institute (ODI), he chaired the knowledge manager for the BRACED resilience program. At the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Maarten is Review Editor for AR7 Working Group II; he previously served as Coordinating Lead Author in AR6 WGII and member of the core writing team for the Summary for Policy Makers, Coordinating Lead Author for SREX, Lead Author for AR5 WGII and contributing author for AR6 WGI and WGIII. He previously worked with the World Bank and other development banks, international organisations, and government departments. He holds a PhD in atmospheric science from Utrecht University and the Max Planck Institute in Mainz.
