Espoir Kulimushi Mugabo

WP 5 PhD researcher

Espoir Kulimushi Mugabo is a PhD researcher in WP 5: Fisherfolks' Weather – and Climate-related Knowledge ∞ Action Networks. He works on fisheries in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is based at both ISDR-Bukavu and the University of Amsterdam.

Espoir has a master's degree in Rural Development, specialising in Natural Resource Technology and Governance. He obtained this degree at ISDR-Bukavu. In addition, he has been working for more than seven years as a researcher in the DRC on behalf of ISDR-Bukavu, notably at the Angaza Institute International Research Centre in eastern DRC. His work at the research centre has allowed him to gain extensive experience in empirical and theoretical research on natural resource governance, particularly water governance. His articles have been published in renowned international peer-reviewed journals.

In addition, he has extensive experience in university-level teaching. He has been a teaching and research assistant and lecturer at ISDR Kaziba since 2018. He teaches courses on Population, Environment and Development, Social Science Research Methods, Communication and Development, and Project Monitoring and Evaluation in the Regional Planning Department. He was awarded the 2023-2024 scholarship offered by GIZ in collaboration with the University of Ghent to Congolese researchers to enable them to conduct independent research in the context of the decolonisation of academic knowledge and conflict analysis in the DRC.
