Sondos Derbani

WP 6 PhD researcher

Sondos Derbani is a PhD researcher in WP 6: Urban Precarious Outdoor Workers' Weather- and Climate-related Knowledge ∞ Action Networks. She works with outdoor workers in Morocco's construction industry. Her PhD is based at both the Cadi Ayyad University and ISS/EUR.

Sondos is from Morocco and recently obtained her master's degree in architecture. During her six years of architecture school, she was able to develop a very strong interest in the intersection between construction, climate resilience and social justice. Her thesis focused on urban agriculture in Casablanca, where she focused on integrating agricultural spaces into urban expansion while conserving ecological balance and local livelihood. Alongside her academic work, she has also participated in workshops on resilient housing after the El Haouz earthquake and on emergency shelter designs for displaced communities. These experiences have deepened her commitment to addressing the issues of vulnerable communities as well as linking design with social and climate resilience. She is motivated to pursue a PhD because she wants to engage in a long-term, meaningful research where she can bridge her architectural training with her belief in climate justice and social equity. The Climares project provides the perfect opportunity for her to focus on climate resilience for construction workers in Morocco, whose struggles she has witnessed firsthand during many internships on construction sites. Her goal is to contribute to innovative, inclusive and practical solutions to protect these communities.
